The Kenya Transport Research Network (KTRN) based at the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi, and the Socially Just Public Transport Working Group - facilitated by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung-Kenya, (FES Kenya) - will host an informal discussion on “Promoting a Socially Just Public Transport and the Role of Actors in Kenya.”

The event will take place on 28th November 2019 from 2.00pm-4.30pm at the Nairobi Safari Club (Lilian Towers).

The meeting will bring together experts on the topic, including, researchers, students, policy makers, civil society, trade unions and transport workers to share knowledge. Participation of different actors will provide a good synergy for knowledge sharing, policy influence and research uptake.

KTRN Background

The Kenya Transport Research Network (KTRN) was formed in May 2015 after the Institute for Development Studies (IDS) long engagement with transport issues with support of development partners. The FIA Foundation and the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) funded IDS to provide support to the Ministry of Transport and to be part of a consortium of three African universities establishing the African Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Studies in Public and Non Motorised Transport (ACET), respectively.

Through quarterly meetings, KTRN provides an engagement forum for scholars from different disciplines - transport sociologists, urban planners, land economists, engineers, ICT specialists, gender specialists, and transport geographers. It also provides a mentorship platform for young scholars interested in transport issues, and a place for public transport actors, including workers, policy makers and practitioners to engage with researchers.
