The project's scientific goals include data collection to capture the requirements of pedestrians and cyclists, the development of tailor-made solutions to promote walking and cycling, and real-life experiments to test innovative solutions at the community level. The project will also provide education and training for traffic planners, engineers, and practitioners, with the objective of institutionalizing capacity-building practices in the region.

The project consortium consists of Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and the University of Kassel in Germany, Makerere University, Uganda, University of Nairobi, Kenya, and Mekelle University, Ethiopia. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany, and, the German Academic Exchange Service and will run from June 2021 to May 2025.

Through the combination of research and education, the CAMA project aims to change perceptions towards active mobility and transition towards more walkable and bikeable cities in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in more livable and sustainable communities.

Stakeholders Workshop 2024

This is the third stakeholders’ workshop in Nairobi since the inception of the CAMA project. The workshop, held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the University of Nairobi Towers was tailored towards achieving Work Package 3 on Learning Alliances on Active Mobility as shown in Figure 1. The workshop brought together stakeholders in the active mobility spaces with the following objectives;

  1. To provide an overview of the CAMA project's progress to the stakeholders during the 2023/2024 period.
  2. To engage stakeholders in active discussions and idea-sharing regarding potential 'Living Labs' initiative on University Way, which will serve as testbeds for solutions fostering walkable and bikeable street spaces.

Expected Outcomes:

  1. Identification of potential 'Living Labs' interventions on University Way, which will serve as experimental site for testing active mobility solutions.
  2. Collaborations and partnerships to co-design and implement the 'Living Labs' interventions on University Way
