IDS Founding Day virtual seminar

The Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Nairobi, is pleased to invite you to a series of IDS Day seminars starting on Thursday October 8, 2020. The seminars comprise presentations by leading African scholars and researchers. Since its inception on October 8, 1965, IDS has carried out research on issues of development concern and has been collaborating with partners locally and globally to influence development policy and practice. The seminars will also pay attention to the Kenya debate of the 70s and 80s– ‘What went right’ and ‘what has gone wrong’.

Seminar: The “Two-Thirds Gender Principle” for Elected Bodies: How Did we Get Here, Where are we and where Might we be Going?

Prof. Yash Pal Ghai and Prof. Jill Cottrell Ghai are Kenyan academics in constitutional law. They are both Directors of the Katiba Institute which was set up to promote knowledge and understanding of Kenya’s Constitution and constitutionalism, and to defend and facilitate implementation of the Constitution. Ten years after the new constitution was adopted in Kenya, there is still no law guaranteeing achievement of the “two-thirds gender rule”.

Seminar: Sustainability and Social Licence to Operate

Linda Were is currently a PhD student at IDS University of Nairobi with interests in natural resources, sustainability and social performance. Sustainable development is a guiding principle for long term development which balances economic, social and environmental sustainability. Businesses especially those in the extractive industries such as mining are being pushed by various stakeholders including local communities to integrate the concepts of sustainability in their activities. Linda’s research is set to examine the relationship between sustainability and social licence to operate.
