The Data for Governance Alliance (D4GA) collaborates with African civil society and equips them with
data-driven tools and knowledge to engage effectively with the African Union's (AU) Governance
Platform and national governments. The project aims to foster collaboration between the African Union's
organs and Pan-African Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to advance governance, democracy, and
human rights throughout Africa. This is essential programming aiming to create impact on a continental
level, where Africans directly engage and influence the development agenda of the Continent, and
leverage continental platforms for peace and economic development.
The project, titled "Enhancing Pan-African Civil Society Participation and Engagement with the African
Governance Platform (AGP) in Protection and Promotion of Democracy, Governance, Human, and
People's Rights in Africa," centres on data-based advocacy by Pan-African CSO networks concerning
governance, democracy, and human rights issues within the AGP. There is a global decline in the
commitment to and integrity of the rule of law, with many African countries struggling with leaders
wanting to hold onto power for so long, erosion of human rights, and judicial systems that are not able
to give timely, affordable and accessible justice to their citizens. Yet, promoting democracy,
governance, and human and people's rights in Africa is fundamental to achieving peace, prosperity
and sustainable economic development across the continent. These concerning trends are highlighted
in reports published by organizations including Afrobarometer, Mo Ibrahim Foundation, and Freedom
House, and reflected in indicators such as the World Justice Project's 2023 Rule of Law Index.
