Prof. James S. Coleman was an Africanist scholar and a Political Science Professor. He was the IDS Director (1968 to 1970). He was as an associate director of the Rockefeller Foundation and as its representative in East Africa and Zaire. He was also the Chair of the Council on International and Comparative Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the Director of UCLA’s International Studies and Overseas Programs (now known as UCLA's International Institute).
