In collaboration with the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi and the Platform Magazine, Amnesty International Kenya invites submissions of papers on the theme: Reflections on the Shakahola Tragedy, One Year Later: Dissecting the Freedom of Conscience, Religion, Belief and Opinions. We also welcome groundbreaking papers addressing broader human rights issues covered in the Amnesty International Global Annual Report.

Thematic Areas:

• Right to truth, justice and reparations for victims and families of the Shokahola tragedy.
• Human Rights approaches to freedom of worship.
• The role of law in expanding and protecting the exercise of freedom of worship.
• Intervention by different actors (international/regional organisations, CSOs/NGOs) in preventing religious extremism.

Abstracts addressing topics within the Amnesty International Global Annual Report are highly encouraged. Examples include:

• • Extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances
  • Conflict
  • The right to protest
  • The right to health and a healthy environment
  • Freedom of expression and assembly
  • LGBTI+ person rights
  • The rights of women and girls

Accepted papers will be presented at the Amnesty International Kenya 2024 Human Rights Conference scheduled to take place on 25^th April 2024 at the University of Nairobi. Scholars, academics, and human rights enthusiasts will come together to discuss these issues and formulate policy recommendations. Full versions of accepted papers will be published in a special issue of The Platform Magazine.
