Research Seminar on Pastoralists' Land Rights and Resilience

 

IDS held a very insightful research seminar on land rights and resilience on 23rd November 2023 at the University of Nairobi Main Campus, VIP Lounge 5th Floor University of Nairobi Towers. 

The Rights and Resilience Project (RARE) is a collaboration between the University of Copenhagen (UCPH), the University of Nairobi (UoN), the Danish Institute of International Studies (DIIS), Roskilde University (RUC), and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). RARE investigates relationships between resilience and land rights in the context of pastoral and agro-pastoral adaptation in Kenya. 

The Research seminar saw presentations from experts and Ph.D. students including; 

Dr. Iben Nathan of IFRO and the University of Copenhagen, Dr. Guyo Malicha Roba of ILRI, who gave the Keynote address, and Sylvia Rotich, a Ph.D. student at the University of Nairobi and the University of Copenhagen, who presented on Suburban pastoralist and adaptation at the rural-urban interface. Jackson Wachira, a Ph.D. student at the University of Nairobi, presented on Community-based conservation and pastoralist climate change adaptation. Rahma Hassan's presentation No Option but to Settle, and Alphonse Mollo’s on Closing the Climate Information Gap both from the University of Nairobi and the University of Copenhagen were moderated by Dr Martin Marani. 

Dr. Per Knutsson of Guttenburg University made a presentation on The role of increased boundary-making in the Karamoja cluster for land tenure security and resilience

Dr. Achiba Gargule presented on Shadow state and the making of informal territories, negotiating conservation and community land reforms in the Kenyan wildlife frontier.

Leah Aoko of Africa Research Impact Network made a presentation on Understanding enablers of inclusive resilience building: lessons from adaptation research alliance micro-grants in Africa
