Linda Were is currently a PhD student at IDS University of Nairobi with interests in natural resources, sustainability and social performance. Sustainable development is a guiding principle for long term development which balances economic, social and environmental sustainability. Businesses especially those in the extractive industries such as mining are being pushed by various stakeholders including local communities to integrate the concepts of sustainability in their activities. Linda’s research is set to examine the relationship between sustainability and social licence to operate. The study will be conducted in Kwale County which is the host to Base Titanium mining activities and it will adopt the sustainable development framework and the social licence to operate model.
