IDS Afrobarometer seminar series - The Development Question: Public Debts, Sustainability, and Citizens in Kenya

The public debt debate in Kenya has gained a lot of interest in the recent past owing to the view that the public debt has now exceeded the 60% of the GDP mark. Both policy makers and citizens have questioned the issue of sustainability of public debt which seems to be growing by day. While it is evident that most of the public debt is used to finance infrastructural projects some of it still finance recurrent expenses. Based on Afrobarometer data and other existing data sets, we seek to address the following key questions:

  • Why is public debt a developmental issue?
  • Has public debt in Kenya grown at an alarming rate
  • lately?
  • What is the perception of Kenyans on this issue of
  • public debt sustainability?
  • What policy options exist for managing debts in
  • Kenya?
